A Women-Led Journey with Bianca Niemand in Makhanda
Friday, 15th August 2025
Picture yourself sipping coffee at a cozy guesthouse in Makhanda or spotting wildlife at a game reserve, all while being hosted by someone who’s rewriting what leadership looks like. That’s Bianca Niemand, the powerhouse behind Oak Lodge Guesthouse and Temba Private Game Reserve. Her story is one of climbing high and lifting others up. “My journey started in 2018 as a hotel receptionist, a role that taught me the value of service and attention to detail. Over time, I climbed the ladder and eventually became the general manager,” she says, her voice steady with pride. A big moment came when she moved to Makhanda: “A major turning point came in 2023 when I relocated to Makhanda and managed a gaming site that I led to become one of the top 3 Type B casinos in the Eastern Cape. These experiences shaped my leadership style, built resilience, and ultimately prepared me for my current role at both Oak Lodge Guesthouse and Temba Private Game Reserve.” You can feel her determination—she’s someone who turns challenges into stepping stones.
Bianca’s passion keeps her going every day. “I thrive on structure, growth, and purpose. What keeps me inspired is the opportunity to build strong teams, deliver exceptional guest experiences, and see the direct impact of our work on local tourism. Hospitality is about making people feel at home and valued – and that sense of service and leadership deeply motivates me,” she shares, her words buzzing with energy. Whether it’s making sure guests feel like family at Oak Lodge or guiding them through Temba’s wild beauty, she’s all about creating moments that stick with you.
Her work puts Makhanda on the map. “Both Oak Lodge and Temba are important contributors to Makhanda’s tourism ecosystem. We not only provide accommodation and memorable experiences but also help boost the local economy by creating jobs and supporting nearby businesses,” she explains. At Temba, you might spot a giraffe while learning about South Africa’s wildlife, and at Oak Lodge, you’re in the heart of the city’s artsy vibe. “Temba Private Game Reserve, in particular, offers guests a deeper connection to South Africa’s natural beauty and wildlife, while Oak Lodge Guesthouse welcomes travelers, academics, and artists to the cultural heart of the city,” she adds, painting a picture of adventure and comfort.
This Women’s Month, the theme “The Urgency to Achieving Gender Equality and Empowering Women and Girls” lights a fire in Bianca. “I believe education is one of the most powerful tools we can use to empower women. As someone who was recognized as a top academic achiever and is planning to pursue an MBA, I stand by the belief that every girl deserves access to knowledge, opportunities, and leadership. The time for change is now – and it starts with us championing each other,” she says, her voice full of conviction. She’s faced her share of hurdles: “In leadership roles, particularly in male-dominated environments like parts of hospitality, women are often underestimated. I’ve faced situations where my decisions were questioned purely based on my gender. What helped me overcome these challenges was performance – showing results, leading by example, and never compromising my values. I also surrounded myself with mentors and like-minded women who reminded me of my worth.” Her story is a reminder that you can rise above doubt with hard work and a solid crew.
To young women dreaming big, Bianca’s message is a wake-up call: “Know your worth and never stop learning. The world may try to define your limits, but your dreams and work ethic will always speak louder. Ask questions, take up space, and never apologise for being ambitious. There is no ‘right time’ to be powerful – your time is now.” Her bold, no-nonsense vibe makes you want to cheer.
