Linda Mtse’s story is one of resilience, passion, and an unwavering love for hospitality. Born and raised in the heart of Makhanda, she never imagined that one day she would turn her own home into an award-winning homestay. From humble beginnings to winning 3rd place in The Best Service Category at the EC Homestay Awards for being the Most Organized Homestay, Linda’s journey is nothing short of remarkable.

Growing up, Linda attended primary and high school right here in Makhanda, where she discovered her love for hospitality in a subject that has long been a cornerstone of her life—Home Economics. Reflecting on her school days, she fondly recalls a quote from her late teacher, Ms. Tinta, who would remind her class,
"Home Economics is not just about how to cook umphokoqo and Needlework."
It was in these early moments that Linda's passion was sparked, and she knew hospitality was where her future lay.

After high school, Linda pursued a Secondary Teachers Diploma, majoring in Home Economics and Needlework. But with teaching jobs scarce at the time, she set her sights on the hospitality industry. Starting her career at Steers as a General Worker, she quickly climbed the ranks to become a manager, proving her dedication and skill.

Building a Foundation in Hospitality

Linda's journey didn’t stop at Steers. She soon accepted a position as a Food Service Supervisor at Fort England Hospital. Ever the go-getter, she furthered her studies, earning a Diploma in Food and Beverage Management. Her career flourished, and she was promoted to roles such as Chief Housekeeper and even Acting Assistant Director of Operations, overseeing everything from food services to maintenance.

Her work took her to Winterberg TB Hospital in Fort Beaufort, where she served as Assistant Director of Operations, but Linda’s heart always remained in Makhanda. It wasn’t long before she returned to her hometown to take up a role at Rhodes University as a Housekeeping Assistant Manager, managing student rooms and festival accommodations.

However, in 2019, her contract at Rhodes ended, and Linda found herself at a crossroads. But instead of giving up, she seized the opportunity to transform her own home into a homestay—a decision that has brought her not only personal fulfillment but also provincial recognition.

How the Homestay Journey Began

"I am here today because of Makana Tourism, the Department of Sport Recreation Arts and Culture (DSRAC), and Makana Local Municipality," Linda shared with us. "I didn’t know much about the homestay program at first, but with the right guidance and knocking on the right doors, I got the help I needed."

Her homestay quickly gained traction, especially during the National Arts Festival (NAF), where she hosts guests through DSRAC. Throughout the year, visitors come to experience the warm and authentic hospitality she offers, and Linda remains hopeful that her business will continue to thrive.

Winning at the Homestay Awards

On 16 September 2024, Linda’s hard work paid off in a big way when she took home the 3rd place award for The Best Service Category at the EC Homestay Awards. Reflecting on her win, she said:
"I feel humbled, honored, grateful, positive, and motivated. I’m thankful to the Lord Almighty and my Ancestors, my entire family, especially my children and my partner. But most importantly, I’m thankful for my clients who experienced my services, nominated me, and motivated me along the way."

Linda believes this award will be a turning point for her business, helping change perceptions around township tourism."Many visitors and tourists are reluctant to book accommodation in township areas due to various concerns. Now, I believe this award will shift that perspective. Being recognized provincially by the ECPTA will elevate my establishment. People will now be more assured of its status, which will help attract more clients eager to explore and experience our environment, ultimately growing the business."

Looking Ahead: A Bright Future for Linda and Township Tourism

Linda’s journey from high school dreams to running an award-winning homestay is a testament to her dedication and love for the hospitality industry. Her passion for her hometown and her commitment to giving guests an authentic Xhosa cultural experience has made her a champion of township tourism.

With this recent recognition, Linda hopes her story will inspire others to look beyond the usual tourist spots and embrace the richness of township experiences."I believe the future is bright. This recognition will bring more visibility, more clients, and hopefully, a thriving business that continues to showcase the beauty of our community."

As township tourism grows, it's people like Linda—driven by passion, culture, and community—who are putting Makhanda on the map, offering visitors an unforgettable glimpse into South Africa’s rich heritage.
