South Africa is in the midst of Tourism and Heritage Month, and Nwabisa Tshikila, affectionately known as Lhoza, is making her mark as a vibrant force in Makhanda’s tourism industry. Through her passion for storytelling, cultural connection, and innovative experiences, Nwabisa is redefining what it means to be a tour guide in the region.

With her company, Lhoza's Tours, she creates memorable adventures that blend education, culture, and fun. From school tours to cultural experiences, Nwabisa is ensuring that every visitor leaves with a deeper connection to Makhanda and its heritage.

A Journey Rooted in Passion

Nwabisa’s journey into tourism began with a learnership at the Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency as a tourism monitor, where she trained at the Albany Museum. Simultaneously, she worked part-time at Ottours as a Domestic Tourism Marketer, gaining valuable industry experience.

After completing her Level 4 Tour Guiding qualification in Nature and Culture Guiding, Nwabisa’s skills caught the attention of Rhodes University and Makana Tourism, who selected her to guide first-year students through Makhanda’s attractions and history. Her time leading international tourists from Port Elizabeth to Addo at Ottours further built her confidence and expertise.

Inspired to carve her own path, Nwabisa founded Lhoza's Tours in 2024, named after the nickname her parents gave her as a young girl. Lhoza's Tours is already making waves with unique offerings—from educational tours for schoolchildren to nature and culture-focused adventures.

Sip and Paint: A Mid-Tourism Month Celebration

This September, right in the heart of Tourism and Heritage Month, Nwabisa is keeping the celebrations alive with her creative Sip and Paint experiences at the Backyard Braai, a popular Tshisa-nyama in Makhanda. Designed to combine art, culture, and connection, these events provide a joyful space for participants to unwind, express themselves, and celebrate South Africa’s rich heritage.

“The idea is to have fun while connecting with our roots and community,” Nwabisa explains. Participants not only paint but also share stories, ideas, and experiences, creating a deep sense of connection and empowerment. With music setting the tone and a relaxed, inclusive atmosphere, every session becomes a celebration of creativity, friendship, and the spirit of Tourism Month.

By blending art with education, Nwabisa is showing that tourism is not just about destinations—it’s about experiences that connect people and culture. Attendees leave inspired, informed, and more aware of how creative activities like painting play a role in promoting tourism and heritage.

A Glimpse into Lhoza's Tours

Nwabisa’s tours are a delightful blend of education, nature, and culture. Since launching Lhoza's Tours, she has organized educational tours for schoolchildren, taking them to Makhanda’s key attractions.

One standout tour was a trip from Makhanda to Port Alfred, which evolved into a family-friendly adventure when parents asked to join. The itinerary included a visit to the Big Pineapple, a game drive at Mansfield Private Game Reserve, and a fun-filled park visit with games and a braai.

To weave in cultural elements, Nwabisa introduced a competition where children shared their ziduko (clan names) and zinqulo (praise songs), connecting the tour to South Africa’s rich heritage.

A Vision for the Future

Nwabisa’s innovative approach to tourism, blending events like Sip and Paint with traditional tours, showcases her creativity and commitment to community engagement. Her ability to create inclusive, meaningful experiences has made her a leading figure in Makhanda’s tourism scene.

As she continues to grow Lhoza's Tours, Nwabisa is not only showcasing the beauty of her region but also empowering others to connect with their heritage and creativity. For those eager to join her next adventure or learn more about her tours, keep an eye on Lhoza's Tours for updates on upcoming events, including Heritage Day celebrations.

With Nwabisa at the helm, every experience is a vibrant celebration of culture, community, and the spirit of tourism.
