Q&A With Illy the Comic Voice of Makhanda
Q: How has growing up in Makhanda shaped your comedy style?
A: I’ve always been that guy who tells stories and cracks jokes about what’s going on around me. Makhanda raised me—so the people, the moments, the chaos, the calm—it’s all in my set. I spent a lot of time with my late grandmother in Xolani, and she was honestly the funniest person I’ve ever known. Her timing was unreal. She had a way of making people laugh even when life was tough, and I think I picked that up without even realising.
Q: The Makana Homestay Experience activation was a first of its kind—how do you think something like that connects to our culture and stories?
A: Honestly, “fun and engaging” should be the tagline for Makhanda. That’s just who we are. The activation felt like us doing what we’ve always done—getting together, sharing food, stories, laughs—but with a cool new twist. It brought the homestay hosts, artists, and guests into one space that felt real. No stage lights, just vibes and connections. That’s powerful.
Q: What do you hope people took away from your hosting and the whole vibe of the event?
A: I just wanted everyone to have a good time and take something meaningful from it. Maybe it's a new idea, a contact, a good memory, or just the feeling of being part of something local and beautiful. I believe in this: when everyone’s got enough to eat, life’s better. And if you’ve got a little extra? Share it. That’s how we build community—and it’s the Makhanda way.
