Choral Concert: God so loved the world
Date: Friday, 13th June 2025
Time: 18:00
We’re in for an exciting weekend in Makhanda. Not only will there be the concluding events of K Week, but (as is often the case in this town) we can look forward to lots of live music. A notice has already been posted about the Clarinet and Piano recital in the Cathedral at 16.00 on Sunday afternoon.
And for those who enjoy the austere beauty of plainsong, at 18.00 on Saturday there will be a service of Compline, also in the Cathedral.
Some weeks ago Saeculum Aureum (= “Golden Age”) sang as part of a celebration of the Community of the Resurrection’s wonderful service to Southern Africa, especially in education, over the last 140 years. The performance was well received, with a repeat performance requested by those who could not attend and those who wished to hear it again.
This presentation will be in the Chancel area of the Cathedral, which is a comfortable, intimate venue for concerts of this kind, and visually dazzling, especially during this season of Pentecost.
The programme will be largely that of the previous performance, but with the addition of a piece by Orlando Gibbons, the 400th anniversary of whose death occurred a few days ago.
Admission is free.
There will be a retiring collection towards the Cathedral’s Bicentenary Fund.
Representatives of Smhart will be present, and at the end will be happy to escort any members of the audience to their vehicles.
Programme:
Elizabeth Poston: Jesus Christ the apple tree
Michael Praetorius: Psallite unigenito
A-J Bethke: The Call (George Herbert)
