The Big Lady Barge, also known as Spirit of Adventure, is back! It sailed for its first cruise on December 16, 2022 at Halyards Hotel & Spa, after months of being out of operation due to COVID-19.
As the country gradually recovers from the pandemic, Halyards Hotel & Spa aims to reawaken the spirit of adventure by launching its summer programme aboard the Big Lady Barge.
“The Halyards Hotel and Spa is the proud owner of the biggest commercial barge in Port Alfred in the Eastern Cape,” said River Hotels Revenue Manager, Onika Ranft. “The Spirit of Adventure is one of its kind in the area. It is a double decked cruise boat that operates on the Kowie River and accommodates up to 70 passengers. This barge comes fully equipped with a licensed built-in bar,” she said.
Fittingly named the Spirit of Adventure, it has a history of being a party barge, mostly booked by groups for private events and is a lovely experience for holidaymakers who visit Eastern Cape. “Aside from being popular for private events, the Spirit of Adventure is well known for its leisurely two-hour cruise that goes as far as Mansfield Private Reserve before it turns around for the journey back to the PA Harbour. During this trip, guests can experience the unspoilt vista of the Kowie River, with breath taking views of towering cliffs, indigenous vegetation, and ample bird life, whilst being served scrumptious snacks, ice cold beverages and good music,” added Ranft.
