On the bustling streets of Makhanda, amidst the hustle and bustle of daily life, you’ll find Lwazi [SURNAME]—an artisan with a passion for beads and a talent for turning them into wearable art. What started as a personal quest for unique earrings has evolved into a vibrant business that celebrates creativity, individuality, and the rich cultural heritage of the Eastern Cape. But Lwazi’s journey isn’t just about crafting beautiful accessories; it’s about resilience, entrepreneurial spirit, and contributing to the local economy.

In her own words, “I didn’t set out to be a jewellery maker. I just wanted earrings that felt like me,” and that simple desire has led to an inspiring story of growth, creativity, and connection to the community.

It all began in 2012 when Lwazi made a bold personal decision to shave her head and embrace the chiskop (shaved hairstyle) look. As someone who valued self-expression, she realized the earrings she bought from stores didn’t suit her unique style or make her feel special. “When you have a chiskop, you need something custom because earrings are your hair in a way,” she shared. This realization sparked her desire to create earrings that reflected her individuality.

After buying earrings from someone who custom-made them to her specifications, Lwazi recognized that she was giving the ideas while paying for the work. “I thought, ‘I can do this myself,’” and from that moment on, she started creating her own jewellery. What began as a personal project soon caught the attention of those around her. People began asking for earrings just like hers, and before long, Lwazi’s hobby turned into a business.

One of Lwazi's most popular designs is the Tape Measure Earrings, which come in various sizes and colours. She handpicks colours that stand out, creating bold and vibrant patterns. “I put all colours together, and whatever stands out, I choose,” Lwazi explained. She also works closely with her clients, guiding them through consultations to create pieces that suit their style, needs, and occasions.

Her craftsmanship extends beyond just fashion; Lwazi also creates jewellery for traditional healers, honouring the cultural significance of beads in various ceremonies. Each piece tells a story, with colours and designs chosen carefully to meet the occasion’s needs.

Despite her success, Lwazi faces several challenges as a street vendor. The unpredictable weather is one of the biggest hurdles. On rainy days, she’s unable to trade, and when the heat becomes unbearable, she must hide under trees for shade. “We can’t trade without shelter,” she said, highlighting the lack of basic amenities like toilets and bins on High Street, where she often sets up shop. These difficulties, however, have not dampened her determination.

“Growing up in Ext 9 here in township, I loved creativity but never thought I’d end up doing this as my full-time job,” Lwazi shared. Her love for design and her entrepreneurial spirit has helped her turn her passion into a lifestyle. Today, Lwazi’s beadwork not only supports her livelihood but also contributes to empower others in the community.
