If you’ve ever been to a lit event in Makhanda, chances are you’ve seen Siyabulela "Ivy" Madyo doing what he does best pulling the strings behind the scenes, making sure the vibes are right, and keeping the city’s event scene on fire. With over 15 years in the game (and a DJ past that still peeks through in his fresh cuts and street-smart swag), Ivy knows that events aren’t just about music and good times—they’re a serious economic driver.

"Look, when we throw down events like the Makana Music Festival and the iKasi Experience Closing Music Festival during NAF, we’re not just bringing people to party. We’re opening doors for local businesses, and giving upcoming artists a shot at the big leagues," he says.

According to Ivy, here is the ripple effect of an awesome event:

  • When Makhanda is buzzing with an event, it’s not just the artists who eat. The whole city moves different:
  • Food stalls blow up, giving SMMEs a chance to cash in.
  • Local DJs and artists get to shine, rocking the same stage as national acts
  • Petrol stations, transport services, and grocery stores feel the rush.
  • Accommodations fill up, from BnBs to guesthouses—but homestays? Not so much.

Why Homestays Should Be in the Mix

Despite all the business flowing, homestays are still slept on. Ivy thinks that’s gotta change:

"We need more details on homestays so event organisers can easily include them in their marketing. Things like pricing, availability, and any unique extras would be so helpful."

The Game Plan

It’s simple—homestay owners and event organizers need to link up. Imagine a system where:

  • Every big event in Makhanda includes homestays in their accommodation guide.
  • Guests get to experience local culture firsthand, instead of just checking into the usual hotels.
  • More money stays in the community, supporting families and growing small businesses.

"At the end of the day, events and homestays are like beats and bass—they just go together. The more we connect the dots, the stronger Makhanda’s tourism game gets. Let’s make sure that when the city turns up, everybody eats." – Ivy Madyo.
