Makana Tourism, in collaboration with the Sarah Baartman District Municipality, officially unveiled the revitalised Homestay Experience on 5 April 2025—a dynamic reimagining of the pioneering Kwam eMakana model. This initiative marks a significant step forward in promoting cultural tourism, economic empowerment, and inclusive community development in Makhanda’s townships.

Rooted in the spirit of ubuntu, the Homestay Experience invites visitors to connect with local residents in an authentic and meaningful way—through warm conversations, shared meals, and a glimpse into daily township life. More than just accommodation, it offers a cultural exchange that fosters understanding and appreciation.

Empowerment Through Hospitality

The relaunch event was more than ceremonial—it celebrated the lives transformed by homestay entrepreneurship. For hosts like Linda Mtse of Lish Homestay, the programme has been life-changing. Once unemployed, she now runs her own business, using her income to support her household and fund her child’s education.

Another powerful voice, Faith Mtyida-Ngandzi of Faith’s Homestay, shared a deeply personal account: “This was the one project that kept me alive,” she said, crediting the programme for helping her rebuild her life after illness.

These testimonials speak volumes about the initiative’s far-reaching social and economic impact.
