LEAD Short Course: A Little Bit of Care Goes a Long Way
Date: Monday, 14th June 2021
"...Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others..." – Jack Welch
Presenters: Dave Stevens (OK 1998), Associate with Legitimate Leadership.
Dave shares some of his experience which led to this leadership virtual workshop:
"I arrived at Kingswood Junior in 1992 having already “chickened out” of boarding school once before. I was terrified and had no self-belief. What do you expect when you’re told you will never amount to anything? In my 12-year-old mind that was the truth. It had been decided!
Over the next few years, I realised, with the help of many exceptional people who cared about me and wanted me to realise the best in myself, that it was my decision.
• Management and leadership are not the same.
• Leadership is not concerned with what you can get out of people, but rather with what you can give them; care and growth.
• Before leaders can legitimately demand excellence in others, they must demonstrate excellence in themselves – they must earn the right to do so
• Leadership is not about skills, it’s about decisions!
• You are the project!
About the speaker:
Dave is an Associate with Legitimate Leadership: The Legitimate Leadership team designs and implements focused consulting and organisation development interventions aimed at improving legitimacy, trust, contribution, and accountability.
Dave’s career before joining Legitimate Leadership was primarily in high-pressure project environments where delivery within time and budget constraints is critical. In these environments, leadership is crucial in ensuring delivery.
He has worked in various sectors: mining, electricity (distribution and billing), banking (both retail and investment), insurance, and telecommunications and broadcasting. He has led and taken accountability for many successful project implementations. He is particularly passionate about digital transformation in personal productivity.
His first appointment as a consultant was at Accenture in 2004.
At Kingswood, he was a keen sportsman (perhaps to the detriment of his academic performance) and was head prefect in his final year. He is married to Jen (OK 1999) and has two young sons. He lives in Johannesburg and his non-work interests are scuba diving, cooking, and carpentry.
