The Literature Heritage, Ecology Conference
Date: Monday, 1st March 2021 to Monday, 1st February 2021
The Literature Heritage, Ecology Conference hosted by Amazwi South African Museum of Literature will take place online, starting 1 March 2021.
The theme of the conference is plants and soil.
Amazwi states that plants are a significant element of indigenous knowledge, and thus of South Africa’s natural and cultural heritage. Plants thus form a point of connection between historical/heritage and conservation perspectives. "From flowers to forests, farms to gardens, wilderness and veld, plants have featured in many works of literature. From storytelling under a tree to poetic descriptions of plants to sustained metaphors to the very fact that works of literature are printed on paper made from trees/dead plants, there is a complex and interesting relationship between storytelling and the botanical world."
The conference is aimed to encourage interdisciplinary perspectives, and emphasises collaboration and accessibility across disciplines. A goal of this conference is to foster cooperation and interaction between the humanities and the sciences.
